what is the best way to break in a new baseball glove (catchers mitt)?

I would suggest trying some glove conditioner to help soften the pocket. You'll also need to play catch a lot, and try using a "glove sock" or some heavy rubber bands wrapped around the glove while keeping a baseball in the pocket when you're not using it.
