About BPA, is it dangerous, what types of bottles is it in?
First off, how dangerous is it if i use cold and room temperature liquids
Second: if it was exposed to hot watter in the past, does it still leech alot of the chemecal
Third: do the softer HDPE bottles have it in them ( i think they have a 3 on the bottom)
Feel free to talk all about BPA and explain what all the fuss is about
Hi,
BPA (short for Bisphenol A) is a key building block in the production of many plastics, especially polycarbonate. There is concern among some researchers that long-term low-level exposure to BPA may cause health problems in humans, due to that fact that it mimics the body's own estrogen - perhaps leading to developmental impairment, cancer, obesity and interference with brain activity related to memory, learning and mood.
There will always be some leaching of BPA from relevant plastic bottles into the liquid they hold and it's difficult to supply an exact temperature at which it become dangerous since there are a lot of other factor involved (e.g., the amount of time the liquid is in the bottle, the surface area of the plastic, the acidity of the liquid, etc.), plus we still don't really know what amount is considered toxic . But keep in mind that as the temperature rises thus the leaching of BPA out of the plastic will increase.
If the plastic was exposed once to hot water in the past, I would say that it would have very little effect on future BPA leaching - it won't "detoxify" the plastic nor will it increase the leaching into other liquids that would come in contact with.
HDPE (High Density PolyEthylene) is labeled as Type 2. The plastics that are most susceptible to have PBA in them are Type 7 (which is a general category of several plastic including polycrbonate) and Type 3 (which is PVC - PolyVinyl Chloride). You'll find BPA containing plastics as bottles (baby- and water-) and as the inside lining of many food and beverage containers.
If you want to find out more about BPA, it's hazards and how to detect for it by yourself than follow the links I posted under sources.
Keep safe,
